I thought Id hit the jackpot, Feigin said. Weve had Giannis invest in the brewers, which is like. I would say again, from our owners, from day one, they understood that from how are we stewards of the brand of the Bucks and how are we examples in the community? It just kind of really trying. Peter Feigin: Khris Middleton, as you can imagine, nobody understands that players have been having to get COVID tested twice a day and you got to come into our training center and we have parking spaces. Peter: That was the Milwaukee Bucks. Peter Feigin: Well, Mr. Red, it's kind of for naught, I'd do anything for you, so this is an easy period of time. A lot of storytelling and symbolic, and its been 50 years between championships. Off the court it is best practice. Peter: How do we envision the next day? Michael Red: I'm a big believer that the healthier the person, the healthier the product, healthier the business. I think COVID, like everything, slowed us up for about a year, but we're back on it. I think it changes the landscape. John: He was gone. And there is no magic wand that kind of changes this in six months. John: You grew up on the Upper East Side, you are a native New Yorker, your brothers still back there. She couldn't be more supporting from everything. Peter: did active, to get in. But it was one of these kind of diversion life lessons that you don't know where life takes you and just take total opportunity for it. Just what you said is like were always coming in this balance of how do we, we want Giannis to represent the Bucks brand. John: Thats so true. So it was kind of building rapport and trust was the only way to kind of get this done. We built an infrastructure, to our owners' credit on, they made it really simple. Michael Red: Giannis Antetokounmpo and that team is so special to watch. How do we affect the community together? We call it volundeering. I think thats like fair. These guys are human beings. We stopped operating. So, it's a little bit kind of nuts and delusional to go through thinking like you can kind of accomplish or solve or get anything done, but it's kind of the way I've kind of attacked life in a big way. You build this infrastructure and skill set that is geared toward a championship. That was the real mad man era that your mom was in at Grey Advertising, right? Talk about the steps leading up to pulling off, living the dream, actually winning the championship. And I think of it, Michael, to answer the second part, it's like we thought we were woke. And that is one of the best ways to summarize Peter's spirit. So, I don't think uncommon to probably everybody and certainly every leader, everybody who has a real responsibility, the last 12 months were like nothing we could have ever imagined, we could have ever thought about and really reacted to. Talk about having arguably the greatest player in the world on your team. Peter Feigin: Yeah, so those are two great questions. How big a deal it is to renovate downtown, and how big we can become and what a billboard the Milwaukee Bucks should be for Wisconsin around the world. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Peter Feigin: And then, one of the more proud moments in pro sports, we lead a boycott to a game, that becomes really a pause for the entire world. I think probably one of the last public-private partnerships that thatll happen, when Troy brought together the city, the county and the state to put together a partnership for a new arena in downtown Milwaukee. Kind of surreal. Youre going to actually have to be a decent person and not be toxic. It's truly like a restart. Peter: We like to be, delusionally optimistic. The arena was, if the arena didnt happen, nothing happens, and that was a public-private. It would be fun to own a hundred McDonalds franchises and you guys would be great at that. So, if you're against equality, then we probably never will understand or get along or agree with each other." Above me there are my two children, my son, Tyler, my daughter, Courtney. We had a, if you remember, we had a COVID extended season. Peter Feigin: I mean, just different ways, we started to think about doing this. My son was a freshman at San Joaquin Memorial High School when Brook Lopez was there and he played with Brook under coach Pat Giles. Peter: Which people gave. High draft picks such as Andrew Bogut, Yi Jianlian, Joe Alexander and Brandon Jennings hadn't panned out. Ive been really lucky. Thats just my view, Lasry said. His is a story of grit, will, and great humor. If you need a shot at good inspiration and a good laugh, listen to this episode. How does that, and then, with that also because this harkens back, Im old enough, youre old enough even, we remember the Michael Jordan era, he was the greatest player in the world back in his Again, you not only have one of the greatest players ever to play on the planet, but youve also created this culture of retention. You sound super excited about the future. Unfortunately, I probably haven't changed mentally or emotionally since we met, but she's my teammate. Peter: We took the lumps and then, yeah, I had my dream job when I was in my mid-20s as in Madison Square Garden like running marketing for the New York Knicks and I thought I could have died and gone to heaven and thats, I lived breathed in the Knicks basketball and Ranger hockey, it was the greatest. I got to talk about the journey to the Bucks though. Not everyone is. He's not the smartest guy in the world, but he'll certainly know the business and he'll help you out beyond your hedge fund guys and your data guys.". Now youre there, youre rebuilding. Through Jan. 15, his PER of 29.82 was second in the league behind James Harden and just ahead of LeBron James and Stephen Curry. Michael Red: Peter, Peter Feigin. And I know you had a background in marketing and you worked with the Knicks at certain points in your career. Those are simple, its his genius. Right now, its very hard to figure out and understand where its going, because this is the wild West. He said it. In a Q&A with The Undefeated, Milwaukee Bucks president Peter Feigin talked about resuming the season, the business lost due to COVID-19, and much more. And really build sports entertainment and residential and commercial around it and really have an urban development company that is fueled by the strength of a brand of an NBA team. That's like, that's today's kind of like, "What are we focused on?". Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? Peter Feigin: Hey, John thanks for having me. Growing up, you used to hang out, go to the garden and you were a Knicks fan or Rangers fan and Yankees or Mets. All of a sudden, 12 months ago, that went upside down, and with Giannis, it literally went international, national, regional, local, which is a great turnaround for us.". So, we continue to want to make this a place where players are like, "Shit, I've never been treated like this.". Obviously, your assistant help set this up. It really is. The facilities part was easy. Marc Lasry, the co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, has scaled back his play in recent years. This is a super special edition. Peter Feigin: That this was a year you couldn't even imagine. Engage is the go-to spot for booking talent, for speeches, custom experiences, live streams, and much more. And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." John: Like you said, the smartest people could take the most complex issues and just make them simple. Very little sympathy or empathy for pro athletes because of what they get paid. Which is a huge opportunity. Ill tell you how it I got the offer, the conversation and we play a pickup game of basketball every Saturday for 20 years with the same guys. Peter: The same he is, everywhere else. Thats for every aspect of it. I've got two brothers, my mom, my other family member. So, that was my one get back to kind of surprise him because I think there were a few spies that were taking pictures of every time I parked in that spot for a second. Twin brothers Peter and David Paul are best known for their role in The Barbarians (1987). Peter Feigin, president of the Milwaukee Bucks in Wisconsin, was interviewed by a reporter from NBC affiliate TMJ4 News in his car outside of the team's Fiserv Forum after the Bucks were confirmed . In September 2013, then-deputy commissioner Adam Silver announced that Bradley Center, the team's home since 1988, was unfit for an NBA team. Hes very straightforward. John: That is a big deal. I think it starts with human capital, but it really starts with road mapping out each little thing. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. Michael Red: One thing that impresses me about our organization is how diverse it is. Even though all of us who were so engaged into, nothing compared to what that value was, what that emotion was too. How do we rethink it? Marc Lasry, the co-owner of the Bucks, joined The Run when his sons were students at Trevor. And the family went into the most unique times that we've ever seen in our lifetime a year ago. Were you looking at other franchises that have done this before, or were you looking at other business models and merging some version thereof? I didn't need to do anything. And my brother said, "Oh, my God. Because I know a lot of coaches, lot of presidents, lot of GMs, I run into them and I ask them, can I look at your ring? There's no business." There is an honor system. Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. Being able to play ball with your son is kind of like the best of the best, Peter Feigin said. Every Wednesday, Dan Feigin, now the director of Trevors Upper School on the Upper East Side, sends a mass email to determine who will be playing that weekend. You cant replicate that., https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/01/sports/pickup-basketball-new-york.html. So, I can't be too vocal, because if the owners knew how valuable it was that, I conceptually run a retail operation with thousands of pieces of apparel. That sounds like a little piece, but that's a big piece in the world. Now youve been to the top of the mountain. Malcolm D. Lee, the director of the Space Jam sequel starring LeBron James, and Christopher dAmboise, a former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, are two of the games founding fathers. And I didn't need to get paid. "We had to build a new arena or we were going to move the team. John: Hey, Peter. I heard or to make the statement, are you the employee of the month? So, of course, he's just had enough. It found him. Okay. They have been through a system, if nothing else, highly competitive basketball for the last 12, 14 years, including kind of being shelled up in college, and what the pros are. Our expectation is to win a championship. Peter: Thats great, thats one of the only times that questions been asked. We hired a great human capital person to build up the structure, but it was really best practice. Yes, we are shiny toy people want to see how you build a project in time and under budget and how youd manage a project. He's also been quoted as saying he wants to play for the Bucks "forever" and he does not know if he could be "the same player" in a "flashy city." I think weve gravitated again with a lot of people weve brought in to engage and get it done. Peter Feigin: So, that was and sort of weird comfort in that everybody in the world was going through it. John: Another native New Yorker from Roslyn, New York. Peter: heres the market. How do we become attractive and bring more companies here and bring more empty nesters and college graduates and make this a really attractive place to live. So, I'm, as you know, extremely excitable and just want to kind of attack it and love the challenge. Some guys I went to high school with some guys who played college, and I leaked it at the opportunity at that game on a Saturday morning and everybody went absolutely nuts because for better or worse, Im kind of being your average guy, you do not think Peter Fiegins going to have the opportunity to become an NBA president to do it and these jobs are so rare and so incredible. Mike, you get it because you lived it. But boy, if I could have mastered that a little bit earlier that that'd be one of the things I would do. Then you talk about what your leadership is and what your purse is so it all starts and ends with Giannis. So, whole different world kind of came around with COVID. Got it. John: Got it. Peter: Well, its having like Ive always said, people talk about their personal board of directors and what that is and I had the advantage and still have the advantage of my mother being the best consultant you could possibly have. I literally said, "Hey, Giannis, do me a favor. "I did kind of the 'Dick Cheney.' Defenders are responsible for calling fouls. Let them know they're part of the family. It's got so many other opportunities I never would have thought of ever." And then we kind of sat there until like, "Oh, my God." How do we build the baselines? Here is your example of everything you read everything you hear, everything he does is true. I just wanted to get it done and kind of move the needle and kind of. John: Welcome to another edition of the impact podcast. Whos got next? Lee said. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. Youve collected all this human capital, both starting and back up. It became such a healthy place to be.. And also, obviously some additions with Jrue Holiday and other great players we have this year. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. And you know what their experience is? Giannis Antetokounmpo is the gift that keeps on giving for Bucks' management. Peter: Yeah, it was incredible. We had Chris Middleton and Giannis involved in it kind of conceptually, and really fun conversations with Giannis brother Costas had just won for the Lakers the year before. I think that's something that you work with every day. It's really best of class.". His is a story of grit, will, and great humor. I've been telling him. It's like how it affected the players because that almost helped accelerate the importance of it. And more importantly, kind of like building such a strong infrastructure with other people. And I believe in my heart that the Bucks were real leaders in that moment. That's not a "here we got to the finish line." I answer that by saying like we were successful because at the time the Brooklyn Nets, the Orlando Magic, and a bunch of other teams were selfless with their help with us on how to have best practices on how to build an arena and how to build an infrastructure on how to form. I really think its kind of a cycle of selflessness and kind of best practices. Peter: So my ring sits in my underwear drawer in our house which is like, great and its got readily accessibleI mean its huge. Talk about your organization, community involvement, and the impacts that you get to make both positive and otherwise. Im not a big fan of, hey, we need to make money or consult off that. By the way, its so much fun. John: By the way, weve got with us today, Peter Feigin, hes the president of the Milwaukee Bucks. And you do it, for us, kind of my job was to be that rock and support and think about if you told me that 50% of my time would be spent on making sure everybody is okay. It is a really tough existence. That was out the door. Peter Feigin: And you create this really confusing, frustrating, challenging environment that, Mike, when you were playing, maybe you had a few performance psychologist. If you lose, that might mean you need to keep an eye on several of your friends toddlers. We are one big family. What has it meant to you to bet on yourself? We spend a lot of our time really trying to figure out what are the levers to move the revenue. You were very part of that whole Marquis Jet, NetJet thing too, right? I don't know, being able to be a business person and kind of get away from your day job and go into a data room of a pro team seemed just the greatest thing I'd ever experienced.
